My introduction to the Australian Labradoodle breed started several years before I made the decision to purchase my first puppy.. the one that would start it all, the OG, aka Gia!
My research into the breed quickly convinced me that the Australian Labradoodle was the ideal family pet with their allergy friendly, low to no shed coats, loving and playful personalities, intelligence, good looks and charm. Temperament was especially important in my search for the perfect furry additional to my family. What caught my attention most of all was how the Australian Labradoodle has been bred specifically for therapy dog purposes through many generations of selective breeding. This started the wheels turning around how I can make the dream of starting my own small therapy dog breeding program a reality.
I carefully selected Gia as my foundation girl based on her temperament, conformation, genetics, and beauty. When I arrived at the airport to pick her up, it was love at first sight. She sat quietly in my lap as I waited to board the plane and didn't make a single peep throughout the three connecting flights back home. I was so impressed by her goofy, loving temperament and how easily and calmly she took everything in stride. But that was just the beginning of our journey!
Today, GWagz is a growing breeding program located on 25 acres in the beautiful countryside of Knoxville, Tennessee. We are very centrally located and are only a short distance from surrounding cities such as Nashville, Chattanooga and Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. We are dedicated to producing a small number of selectively bred, ALAA and WALA registered Australian Labradoodle puppies per year for discerning, qualified homes. All of our breeding dogs go through a rigorous health and genetic testing process to ensure the healthiest possible future for the puppies we produce. Our dogs are also members of the family and puppies are raised underfoot in the home and fully socialized.
"What makes an Australian Labradoodle unique?"
If you’re new to the breed and asking yourself the question above, read on! “Australian Labradoodle” or “ALD” refers to an authentic Labradoodle with a verified pedigree that has been selectively bred for generations according to the official breed standard outlined in breed clubs like ALAA and WALA for example. This breed standard and the clubs who uphold it help to ensure that breeders are meeting high standards in regards to the health testing, genetics, temperament, conformation, coat quality and trainability of the dogs in their programs. And fun fact! The ALD has been bred for generations to be the ideal therapy dog. Australian Labradoodles originated from Australia, hence the name. Contrary to popular belief, they are not a mix with an Australian Shepherd or simply the result of mixing a Poodle and a Lab together like the majority of Labradoodles you might see. In my breeding program here at GWagz, being a member of breed clubs like ALAA and WALA is important because I want to uphold a standard of excellence with every puppy I produce and be able to share that peace of mind and commitment with my puppy families! So if you’re researching why you should choose an Australian Labradoodle as your next pet or work with a breeder who is a member of breed clubs like ALAA and WALA, hopefully this helps!
